Q: The October issue of SL suggested using rain barrels. We have 3, one bought from our county extension office (ugly, until I painted it!) and 2 from a winery. One of the winery barrels’ water smells awful, kind of like rotten eggs. Why? What can I do to get rid of the smell? Is it still safe? (the plants do not seem to mind!)
A: Hey Betty,
Your barrels aren’t ugly. I think they look great. The bad smell undoubtedly comes from some sort of organic matter left over in the barrel that bacteria are breaking down. It will decrease over time as it leaches into the water and you use that water in the garden. Since the plants don’t seem to mind, use water from this stinky barrel first so that water doesn’t sit in it too long. If any faithful Grumpian has any other ideas to offer, help Betty out and post them.
