One the South’s favorite ways to chill out is also the most delicious–fruit based ice pops. They’re just what we need during one of the hottest summers on record, and their icy goodness has spawned shops from North Carolina’s Outer Banks to heat-parched Austin.

Whether you like yours fruity or creamy, you’ll find dazzlingly creative flavors at all of these must-try pop shops.  So get on the stick and give them a try while there’s still plenty of summer left. Let us know which are your favorites.

Birmingham  - Steel City Pops
We’d most like to try: Strawberry-Balsamic, Peanut Butter, Pineapple-Jalapeño
Steel City opened in May, and has been melting hearts since then. Locals seek out the cart when they can’t make it to the store.

Charleston, Atlanta, Athens - King of Pops
We’d most like to try: Georgia Peach and Basil, Banana Pudding.
KOP is also the king of flavors—the list is brain-freezingly huge, with many so-Southern choices.

Nashville - Las Paletas Gourmet Popsicles
Authentic Mexican paletas from one of the earliest shops in the South.
We’d most like to try: Plum, Mexican Caramel—all can be dipped in chocolate.

Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham - Locopops

Flavors as distinctive and diverse as the city’s population.

The Wright Brothers might have remained earthbound if they’d tasted these pops!

Austin and DallasGood Pops
We’d most like to try: Banana-cinnamon, Coldbrew Coffee, Hibiscus Mint
No fixed location, pops are sold in stores such as Whole Foods, Central Mkt.

Knoxville - Pop Culture

Le Pops in Little Rock, AR has delicious and creative pops! Some of my favorites include Creamy Avocado, Salted Caramel and Root Beer Float, but everything I’ve had there has been delectable.
