Behind The Scenes at Adam Musick’s Virginia Farm

Southern Living photographer Gary Clark spent time with musician-turned-pig farmer Adam Musick in Virginia. Here Gary shares a few of his favorite moments from the farm. Gary says the photo above captures the day perfectly. In it Adam portrays: “This is me, this is my land, and this is what I love to do.”

“This old grain silo is leftover from when the area was a dairy farm.”
“Photographing animals is harder than being a cat wrangler,” Gary says. “You have only a short span of time before they stop playing nice. A pig is going to only let you hold him for so long.”

“I think Lynyrd Skynyrd’s song ‘Simple Man’ really describes Adam,” Gary says. “He has gone from touring in the spotlight of rock-and-roll to returning to his roots, rolling up his sleeves, and going to work with Mother Earth.”

“Farming is still a 24/7/365 job. You have to love what you do.”

“I love this area of the country,” he says. “It’s right on the Tennessee-North Carolina-Virginia state line, and it has gently rolling hills, beautifully scenics, and it’s rich in Southern history.”
