Meet The Shuggah Pies, three sisters who deliver serious country music with a side of sass.
We caught them at the 30a Songwriters Festival (a three-day event along Scenic Highway 30a with 125 artists performing in 22 venues). One of the first acts of the festival, The Shuggah Pies set the bar high as they played a packed room at Pandora’s in Grayton Beach Friday, with a second set at the Caliza Pool Saturday. And opposed to a lot of the “shushing” that takes place at many of the festival’s listening rooms (which we get, because who wants to hear a loud person talking over a soulful singer-songwriter), the Shuggah Pies sets were full of hootin’ and hollering. We like that too.
Angela (twelve string guitar/mandolin), Courtney (guitar), and Amy Krechel (guitar) are Missouri natives who call Nashville home now. The sisters’ impeccable harmonies combined with fearless lyrics about growing up and moving on strike a chord. “One day I’ll be a lady/settle down and have a baby/but that’s somewhere down the road and I’ve got a ways to go.”
And the name? It comes from their love of baking. Yeah, we could totally hang with them.
The Shuggah Pies are currently recording a full length album at Jeffery Steele’s 3 Ring Circus Music (Steele also performed at the festival) and Omni Sound Studios, both in Nashville). We can see one of these songs ending up on the “Nashville” soundtrack. (Preferably during a scene involving Deacon.)
Till then, their first single, “I’m Ready” is on iTunes. Take a listen. Turn it up. And remember we told you so.
