In the world of Instagram cliches, I’m the person guilty of routinely posting blue skies, palm trees and water. There’s not a beach scene that doesn’t find a home in my mobile adobe. Needless to say, to me South Florida is heaven. And it’s not just because Miami is my hometown.
Many an argument has been made that Miami is not the South. But every time I go back I see my city’s Southerness come through more and more. Just ask chef Kris Wessel at Florida Cookery in South Beach who makes a “Florida is the South” pecan-encrusted grouper served over a cheese grit cake, or the crispy pork belly sushi rolls at PubBelly.
Whether you believe Miami is Southern or not, there’s no denying it’s gorgeous, fun, and a lot warmer than the rest of the region right now.
Last week I got to prance down Ocean Drive in a silk dress and sandals while on my way to the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Blue skies plentiful and palm trees in place.
Olives, pork belly, yellowtail sushi, ceviche on tostones. All the dishes couldn’t sound more different, yet it all works perfectly. Don’t skip a meal at PubBelly Sushi if you visit.
Meanwhile in Palm Beach, we come full circle with the water and the palm trees at The Breakers pool.
