We know the first day of summer is technically June 21, but we subscribe to the idea that in the South the season starts early—Memorial Day weekend to be exact. This is the time when stricter laws of fashion dictate that seersucker and white are officially a go, the grills are fired up, and beach trips are in full swing.

I went hiking at Ruffner Mountain in Birmingham, where I chickened out of delving deeper into its cave system, but I did  finally succeed in making it to the gorgeous overlook (1,100 feet above!) where you see the city below.
