We know the first day of summer is technically June 21, but we subscribe to the idea that in the South the season starts early—Memorial Day weekend to be exact. This is the time when stricter laws of fashion dictate that seersucker and white are officially a go, the grills are fired up, and beach trips are in full swing.
Here is a look at how our editors are kicking off summer in the South:
Photo editor Kate Phillips decamped to the Florida Gulf beaches for a week with her family and friends.
Travel editor Erin Street surprised her kiddo with a trip to Disney World!
Production manager Mary Elizabeth McGinn called on our friends at Jim ‘N Nicks to help cater her Memorial Day feast.
While our Test Kitchen pro Norman King cooked up a brisket.
I went hiking at Ruffner Mountain in Birmingham, where I chickened out of delving deeper into its cave system, but I did finally succeed in making it to the gorgeous overlook (1,100 feet above!) where you see the city below.
