No rain clouds could keep the festive spirit out of our Fourth of July celebrations. Despite having less-than-perfect weather in Birmingham, our editors didn’t miss out on the chance to revel on the 4th. Here is a look at how our team reigned in the holiday.



Executive food editor Hunter Lewis cooked up two SL recipes: Oven Cheat Method ribs and the July issue’s Patchwork Cobbler, which he says really IS the best cobbler.

Travel editor Stephanie Granada spent time with friends all decked out in their holiday finest.

Patriotic cookies

Production assistant Ashley Williams baked up a batch of patriotic cookies.

Puppy traffic

While production manager Mary Elizabeth McGinn Davis braved the traffic with her pup to head south for a day on the lake.


Our new Travel & Features fellow Jeanne Lyons celebrated in style with a cherry red casual summer dress.

And assistant photo editor Kate Phillips (center) headed up to New York to spend time with her siblings.
