Come Thanksgiving, Southerners take it beyond mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. Only on our tables will you also find cornbread, greens, biscuits, red rice, oyster dressing, and cheese grits.

Whether it’s mama’s sweet potato casserole blanketed in mini marshmallows, Aunt Gladys Jewel’s sweet-tart cranberry sauce or grandpa’s turnip greens, every Thanksgiving table has its beloved recurring characters.

But it sure doesn’t hurt to introduce a new star every now and then, especially if you have some extra unexpected visitors.

If you’re looking for new side dishes, try our latest recipes from our November issue.

For thanksgiving this year in addition to the staples: turkey, pecan pie, cranberry sauce (homemade, none of that canned stuff) and mashed potatos, my sister in law brought some vegetarian stromboli that was mouth watering. I’m a meat eater myself and i never thought a vegan dish could be so good and hearty. She says she was inspired by the dish at her favorite restaurant, Nino’s. All I know is that this stromboli will definetely become a staple in our home for future celebrations.
