From movies and book characters to bloggers’ street style, our Style Editor shares what Southern-source is inspiring her weekend look.
I spent a lot of time these cooped-up snow days reading about magazine editors and our industry’s history (hey, we all have our ways of passing the time). One editor who always stands out is Arkansas native Helen Gurley Brown. She was racy, sure, (Helen steered Cosmopolitan into the magazine it is today), but how can we not take a style tip from a woman who armed with curls and pearls redefined a generation? Although weekends are usually about easy breezy style, after wearing cozy clothes (read: leggings and hoodies) for three days, I’m ready to borrow some elements from her power-look to add polish to my Saturday.
Dress: Helen’s dress combines a bold, fashion-forward print with the classic design of a button-down. It’s easy to wear on and off the clock. Tory Burch’s Brigitte Shirtdress delivers the same effect.
Belt: Cinching at the waist is the number one trick to looking slim. A brown one like Vince Camuto’s suede trim belt goes with (almost) everything.
Earrings: Pearls look modern when worn with a no-fuss get-up. Snag a pair from Georgia-based The Pearl Girls. And keep an eye out for the brand’s line of all-American pearls, harvested in Tennessee rivers, this year.
Watch: Be on time—even on the weekends—with a chic design like this maroon one from Marc Jacobs.
Jacket: Helen isn’t wearing one in the photo, but a light trench from Banana Republic in a new-neutral color like navy wards of the winter chill.
Hair: Tease at the roots to add volume and curl random ends. The 1-inch Jilnere by Conair gives strands a nice, silky bounce.
