Anyone who’s ever worked in an office knows that the best days are the ones on which the boss (or editor, hint, hint) brings doughnuts for the staff. It’s such a universally loved moment, that there’s an entire day dedicated to those pastries of puff, those rings of righteousness, those fried circles of joy.

That’s right, it’s the official National Doughnut Day. And, as we all know, doughnut vs. donut isn’t the only debate to be had in the doughnut world. We asked around the Southern Living offices for everyone’s favorite doughnut/donut joint. Here’s what we came up with:

Erin Street, Deputy Editor, Travel
Julie Darling Donuts: Located in Chattanooga’s North Shore neighborhood, Julie Darling Donuts features a rotating menu of specialties, including the banana pudding donuts, red velvet and their legendary pancakes and bacon donut. Could there be a more perfect breakfast? If you’re feeling super decadent go for the donut sundae. ”

Travis M. Andrews, Associate Editor, Travel
Blue Dot Donuts: The donut store in New Orleans recently opened a second location on Tchoupitoulas. Not surprising since the shop (opened by cops!) serves the best rings I’ve ever had. Try the maple bacon long john. Or, if you don’t feel like moving the rest of the day, the ice-cream sandwich with doughnuts replacing chocolate wafters.”

Melody Kitchens, Editorial Fellow
Urban Standard: This coffee joint is my favorite in Birmingham by far, and they have the most incredible blueberry cardamom donut. It’s baked with whole blueberries, and that cardamom spice gives it the best extra kick.”

Hannah Hayes, Assistant Food Editor
Buttermilk Drop Bakery: Recently I had too much fun in New Orleans, and one of the highlights was the buttermilk drops at Buttermilk Drop Bakery. The original shop isn’t exactly on the beaten tourist path, and there isn’t much seating, but there’s heart, soul, and sugar and that’s all that matters. You might recognize the man behind the counter from his role in Beasts of the Southern Wild.”

Susan Alison, Copy Chief
Donut Hole Bakery Café: Because the Santa Rosa Beach bakery has a gazillion doughnut flavor choices (red velvet, please), plus an amazing Mexican omelet and the fluffiest sourdough French toast, and isn’t everything just a little healthier—at least for the soul—at the beach?”

Tell us: What’s your favorite doughnut shop in the South?

I love North Lime Coffee & Donuts in Lexington, KY. Their Maple Bacon Donut has a serious following. I always look forward to my Maple Bacon Eve e-mails. Also, their Mint Chocolate Stout is amazing…tastes just like Girl Scout Thin Mints. Their coffee is good, too.

I would say #1 hands down is The Fractured Prune in Ocean City, MD. So delish and the story behind the name is awesome! Second would be the delicacies from the Jolly Pirate in Huntington, WV.

I love The Heavenly Doughnut Company in Birmingham! They have unusual flavors (my favorite is Oreo) and custom doughnuts for events.

When at the beach, The Donut Hole in Destin is a favorite for me as well.

The yeti would accompany us on mountain bike races, camping trips, beach trips and would have a place of honor on my deck for my all day sunday dinner events we have for the grandchildren.

The best donuts in the entire world (hands down) are from Cajun Market Donut Company (formerly known as Meche’s Donuts) in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. You’ve GOT to try them if you’re ever in their neck of the woods– er, swamp 🙂
