Woodsy Georgia Wedding by Brita Photography

Destination weddings tend to be smaller than hometown weddings, but in Ashley and Kevin’s case, that’s exactly what they wanted. Instead of being married in Boston, where they both live, or in either of their hometowns, they chose an intimate lakeside venue in Georgia, in honor of their first meeting in the Peach State years before. They loved hosting their 75 guests in this special location, and it allowed them to spend time with every single person–with plenty of time leftover to dance!

Thanks so much to our Southern Weddings Blue Ribbon Vendor, Brita Photography, for sharing this wedding with us!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met at Boston College on a Habitat for Humanity trip to Athens, Georgia, and started dating shortly after in March 2009. We dated through college and then didn’t date for a year when I went back to New Jersey and worked in Manhattan, while he stayed in Boston. After we started talking again, we got back together, he proposed, and I sold my Jersey condo and moved up to Boston!

We used lots of succulents because I wanted a ton of green throughout the bouquets. My sister wore lilac and carried blue, green, and white flowers, and the other bridesmaids wore light blue, and carried flowers in purple, green, and white.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? My father has a lake house in Waleska, and he is planning to retire there with my stepmom. We had the Georgia connection from our service trip where we met, and we wanted our wedding location to be neutral territory for both families–everyone had to travel, including us.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My father had a pearl bracelet made for me that included a gold and navy charm with the year his Pilot’s Association was founded, to represent my grandparents who are no longer with us. I also borrowed my husband’s sister’s veil from her wedding in 2012. She wasn’t able to attend because she’s due at the end of June!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Keeping it so small–everyone got a chance to get to know one another and hang out, and we got to see everyone and dance!

Tell us all about the proposal! Right after we started dating, I worked on Nantucket for the summer. The first time Kevin said “I love you” was when we were waiting for the ferry back to the island after visiting Kevin at his parents’ house in Fall River. He orchestrated a December visit to Nantucket in 2012 to see the lights and have dinner–during his law school finals, no less! He proposed while we were looking at the Christmas tree in the sailboat near Steamboat Wharf.

When did y’all get married? June 7, 2014

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 75

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I originally wanted to have a dress made, and was working with a seamstress in Brooklyn. After I made the move to Boston, I decided to order something through Etsy instead, and then have it tailored if it wasn’t just right. I loved it!

If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It’s a tie between our first dance, and the moment during the ceremony when Kevin put my rings on backwards. When he did that, I just thought it was so cute, and I wouldn’t dream of fixing it until later. The moment just reminded me of the calm he brings me and the fact that he makes me a better person.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Pick a couple of details or vendors you really want to focus on, and don’t try to be perfect in every single category. Pinterest puts a lot of pressure on brides these days, but everything feels and looks best when you put your heart into it and really focus on the areas that matter most to you and your groom.

What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are looking forward to Kevin graduating law school next year, and then saving up to buy a house and start a family (puppy please)!
