It’s no secret that Southerners love buttermilk. At Southern Living, we swear by buttermilk for the sweetest of biscuits, pies, cakes, even ice cream. But these days we’re loving buttermilk for its less conventional use: as a beauty tool. With its fatty and acidic nature, aged buttermilk works as a moisturizer and as an exfoliant. Here, three ways you can use buttermilk today to look prettier tomorrow.

For face: The lactic acid in buttermilk makes for a great exfoliant. Use it in a mask to brighten skin, fade brown spots, and even out tone. Grind a dried orange peel and mix it with buttermilk to make a paste. Apply to face, and let it dry before wiping away with warm water and a washcloth. Alternatively, you can just soak a cotton ball in buttermilk and let it sit on your skin for five minutes.

For skin: Historians says Cleopatra used to bathe in buttermilk for softer skin. Add one cup of buttermilk to your bath routine for similar results. Bet you never thought the same thing that makes your fried chicken so yummy could also make you look like an Egyptian queen.

For hair: Treat dry, damaged hair with this mixture: 1/2 cup buttermilk, 1 cup plain yogurt, 1 egg yolk, and 2 tablespoons honey. Let the mixture sit in hair for 30 minutes then rinse.

Do you have a secret buttermilk beauty recipe? Share it with your fellow Southerners below.

My grandmother used to do this. What the article above leaves out is how you smell like curdled mild afterwards.
