Today marks the opening of the long-awaited James Brown biopic Get On UpEarlier this week, we chatted about the film with Keith Robinson. Today, we chat with Greenville, Mississippi native J.D. Evermore, who stars in both the film and TV’s Rectify (June 19).

1. Local Haunt
“Doe’s Eat Place is in an old house in a bad part of town. They have the biggest and best steaks around, as well as their famous hot tamales and spaghetti and meatballs. I’ve been enjoying this hole in the wall restaurant for as long as I can remember, as have people from all over the world. I traveled home from Los Angeles once to find the place packed with the L.A. Lakers girls. Who would’ve guessed? It’s a must if you ever make it to Greenville.”

2. Southern Saying
“’That boy must’ve fell out of an ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.’ Now, I know it’s not polite to talk about someone’s looks, but there was one country singer from Mississippi, whose music my grandmother loved, but she never missed an opportunity to talk about how ugly he was. That always cracked me up as a kid.”

3. Delta Roots
“I loved exploring my grandparents’ land right off the Mississippi. They had hogs, chickens, a vegetable garden, mud, and plenty of switches for when we got outta line.”

4. Beating the Heat
“In Mississippi you need a good air conditioner—preferably with your face nearly touching the vents as it blows the coldest air possible. If you have access to a walk-in freezer, that’s even better. Otherwise, I like to head out on the lake in a boat with some friends, some tunes, enough cold beer, and everything’s gravy.”

5. Music Choice
“It’s always hard for me to pick favorites, plus I love so many different kinds of music. If we’re talking singers, and if I could only pick one, I would go with Michael Stipe, the singer for R.E.M. from Athens, Georgia. Ever since my friend turned me onto them in ’83 while we were working at a music store in the mall, I’ve been smitten with everything they do.”

6. Southern Grub
“My favorite would be a toss-up between one of my grandmother’s lemon ice box pies and my other grandmother’s blackberry cobbler. There was nothing better than having a big serving and sitting around enjoying their company while hearing about the days of old.”

7. Mississippi Roots
“I loved exploring my grandparent’s nearly self-sufficient acre of land out in the country in TK. They had a full vegetable garden, as well as pecan, peach, pear, plum, and fig trees, as well as blackberry vines and plenty of Delta mud. They also had an overabundance of switches for whenever we got outta line. About the only time we ever needed to venture into town was to get milk, eggs, Fresca, and religion.”

These bring back memories! I’m so glad someone is keeping these dialects alive by using them and recording them via characters in the media.
