Oh how we love checks! This beloved print is fresh again, especially on a living room couch (pictured above) with its oversized scale and unexpected color.

Checks work best “because they are just like Southerners–unpretentious and able to mix with anything,” says designer Meg Braff in our January 2015 issue. “They tone down fussier, more formal patterns and balance prints of contrasting scale such as solids, stripes, and florals.”

If you’d like to dabble in a smaller dose of checks, try adding checked seat cushions to your kitchen table chairs. Add a chinoiserie cachepot to the table, and you’re on the way to mastering¬†the 3 C’s of Southern Decorating (checks, chinoiserie, and chippendale).
