Country singer and Pistol Annies member Ashley Monroe is premiering a new song today, and it’s just for Southern Living fans. “Dixie” comes off her upcoming album The Blade produced by friend and mentor Vince Gill who also produced Monroe’s critically-acclaimed 2013 record Like A Rose.
“‘Dixie’ came from Justin Davis in Striking Matches. He had that idea and we were at some show in the dressing room and he played it for me and I fell in love with it. I’ve always loved those old melodies like that, which sound like they were written way back in the day,” she says.
“I think I was like a 90-year-old man who worked on trains, because some of my earliest songs sound like that. I related to it, and when I sing it, I get mad inside. When I sang it for some radio people, I wondered in my mind, ‘Is this about I’m going to get what I deserve?’ That’s where it goes, because I definitely love the south and I’m never leaving. It’s like, ‘I’ll be damned, you’re not going to take me down.'”
