My nana! Red Chanel lipstick, pearls, and her white hair perfectly coifed from setting her hair earlier that day. Even out in the garden in her “slacks”, she was the epitome of class and grace.

Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy is the quintessential Southern style icon. Although born in New York, she belonged to all of us as First Lady. She was a trendsetter not only in fashion but also in historic preservation. As a testament to her influence on style, the Metropolitan Museum of Art created a display of her iconic White House fashions in the spring and summer of 2001. My husband and I traveled to NYC to view the display; he waited patiently as I lingered over every outfit and read every placard. My favorite souvenir from the trip, the book JACQUELINE KENNEDY: THE WHITE HOUSE YEARS–SELECTIONS FROM THE JOHN F. KENNEDY LIBRARY AND MUSEUM, rests on my coffee table in silent homage to our First Lady of style.

It would have to be our local style icon, Channel 13 news anchor Gina Gaston. She is always impecabbly dressed yet not overdone. She was even voted one of the top 10 best dressed Houston celebraties this year.

I love the way Paula Deen has held herself through all of the publicity & social media in the past few years. She has gone through so much change and still comes across as a well loved lady of the south. Wife, mother, grandmother and aunt she does it all. Looks wonderful after weight loss also.

WIthout a doubt, my grandmother Elsie Thrash. She was an amazing woman who could create a festive Christmas with a little cedar tree and some magnolia pods. She always looked thoughtfully dressed, with little special touches to her simple, inexpensive outfits. She was an artist who would draw little animals in the margins of the letters she’d write to her grandchildren. She was a schoolteacher who wrote her own plays and created her own props. She lived a simple life in small-town Georgia and every person who ever knew her was touched by her love. Celebrities may have style because they have money but she had style with little to nothing. She was a wonder and I miss her.

I would have to say that without a doubt Dolly Parton is my Southern style icon! Back in the summer of 2008 me and my family were on a three week driving vacation through several Southern states when I received a phone call from a friend asking if we would be able to make a appointment in two days that he had gotten for all of us to meet George Bush in the West Wing of the White House! We already had plans to spend several days at Dollywood and see many shows in the area. Of course we were all dying to see George Bush in person but we had one problem……We were checking into our hotel in Sevierville Tennessee in a hour and there was no way we could make it there by the time assigned to us ;-( We sadly told my friend we just couldn’t make it and went on and finished our fun vacation! Once we got home we had a package waiting for us from George himself with a photo of him standing in his office. He sent us a copy of a photo he had taken with our friends family who did make the appointment that day and he wrote over to the side of the photo…”Sorry you couldn’t make it!” President Bush told our friends he couldn’t believe we passed up a visit to see him over Dolly…HaHa He then agreed that Dolly was a pretty special lady :-))) He got a big kick out of it and we missed a once in a lifetime chance to visit the oval office but spending time in Dolly’s hometown was pretty wonderful too!! 🙂

My Southern style icon would definitely be Reese Witherspoon! She is so precious and I just love every movie she’s ever been in!! You can recognize her sweet southern voice without even seeing her face on your TV. I was SO excited to purchase my first outfit from her amazing Draper James line of clothing a few months ago! I’m a second year elementary school teacher on a pretty tight budget so I could sure use a gift card to purchase some new Fall outfits from J.Jill since I have to dress nice every single day. Thanks for the chance to win Southern Living 🙂

I adore P Allen Smith. He puts the South in Southern through his garden design. Although he exhibits some English influence, he infuses it with Southern hospitality and makes everything he touches beautiful.
