Bake-and-Take Cakes: Desserts That Travel Well

August 17, 2015 | By | Comments (5)

For those of us who love to bake, we are never at a loss for a reason to make dessert and this time of year just gives us more excuses. The family getting together for one more reunion? Make a cake. Church ministry team meeting for fall kick-off? Make a cake. Guys having a pre-season work day at the hunt club? Make a cake. Make that two cakes! Not every cake can be transported with ease, however; have you ever driven across town with a 3-layer-masterpiece balanced on a pedestal cake stand wedged in a box surrounded by towels for support? Sounds like a Dr. Seuss book! There is an easier way. Affectionately known as “bake-and-takes,” these cakes are popular because they can be baked, transported, and served in the same pan, which makes traveling with food a lot less stressful. Try one of these top-rated recipes next time you need to “bake-and-take.”

Fresh Apple Cake – Take note: this batter is very thick, almost like cookie dough; don’t think something is wrong with the recipe. Keep going – it’s worth it!

Buttermilk-Glazed Cherry Sheet Cake – Use fresh cherries in this not-too-sweet brunch or late-night snack.

White Sheet Cake – Whether you tailgate at the stadium or party at your house, keep the game-day spirit going by frosting this cake in your team’s colors.

Coconut Sheet Cake – The stately coconut cake goes casual in a 9×13 pan, yet this recipe will still satisfy coconut lovers.

Chocolate-Mayonnaise Cake – Don’t say YUCK without giving it a try! This cake is so moist and delicious you will add the recipe to your favorites list.

Lemon-Yogurt Crumb Cake – Pretty and perfect for a Sunday ladies tea.

What is your go-to bake-and-take recipe? Do you have a cake-transport disaster story you would like to share?
