Start with a base of the Grateful Dead’s early songwriting, sprinkle in a dash or two of Mark Knopfler’s famous guitar tone, muddle in a bit of Dr. John, a hefty dose of J.J. Cale’s gumption, and serve it with the same Eat a Peach attitude of the Allman Brothers – all drowned in a tumbler of melted rye whiskey. Take that concoction down my friends – and savor it again. Ahhh . . . Such satisfaction is the result of listening and re-listening to the new album Dos, by Nashville, Tennessee based Los Colognes.
Dropping this week on September 4th, 2015, Dos is the follow up to 2013’s critically acclaimed Working Together. Recorded during the summer of 2014 at Bombshelter Studios in East Nashville, Dos features my buddy Billy Bennett behind the controls as engineer/mixer, while the band self-produced the tracks bringing in John Baldwin to master.
Though the group has already produced a sophomore album, they actually trace their roots back quite a bit further – 15 years to Chicago where Jay Rutherford (guitar, vocals), Aaron Mortenson (drums, percussion) and bassist Gorden Persha began playing together in a series of start-up gigs.
Mortenson and Rutherford eventually pulled the plug and departed Chicago for Nashville – an albeit too familiar, yet daunting journey. What persists in such a trial is true creativity and musicianship – something you’ll find on each track of Dos.
The group rounded out their sound with the addition of keyboardist Chuck Foster and Wojtek Krupa on guitar. The result is a jam-band-esque line up – made anew through crafty songwriting and fostered through classic rock and Americana melodies.
Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Dos – it’s already looking like it will be my soundtrack for fall. Better yet – catch one of their live shows throughout September, October, and beyond.
