If you happened to be in downtown Atlanta for Labor Day weekend, you might have noticed some strange characters walking the streets. There were Stormtroopers at Starbucks, Star Trek characters in hotel lobbies, and Roman gladiators sparring in Centennial Park. If you didn’t know that it was the Dragon Con convention—an annual gathering of more than 50,000 science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts—you might have been either confused or terrified. Some of the characters were downright scary, like the “intergalactic bounty hunter” I met from Guardians of the Galaxy, a Marvel film. But what I took away from it was a much-needed dose of Halloween costume inspiration, before this I thought wearing some cheap grillz was enough costume effort.

Tired of going as a witch or a vampire? Check out a few of these Dragon Con costumes below and see if they don’t inspire you to step up your Halloween game. But you better get started. Turning yourself into a convincing Twi’lek from Star Wars is no small feat.
