Birmingham, Alabama designer Dana Wolter shares a few snippets on what she likes, who inspires her, and why she’s most excited about the Designer Network.

What are you loving right now? Maybe it’s because I am at a time in my life where I can appreciate a little age on something or someone… Regardless, I would have to say Patina! I love a worn slab of marble, a crusty piece of old wood, gilding…anything with a little wear.

What is something every Southern home should have? Two things: 1. An inviting atmosphere that puts guests at ease the moment they walk through the door. 2. Fresh flowers. My daughter always says our home looks cleaner when we have fresh flowers around, so that is a good enough reason for me.

What should your clients save on? Trends!! If you buy one, know you may be moving on from it in a few years.

What should your clients splurge on? Antique staples such as Louis Philippe mirrors, beautiful chandeliers- pieces that you will keep the rest of your life. You can never go wrong with artwork you love, and I always recommend buying the best upholstery your budget allows because it makes such a difference in comfort and wear.

What color are you loving right now? I recently completed a room filled with emerald green, and it is a beautiful fresh color with depth.

Who are the Southern decorators that influence you most? I am a big admirer of Susan Ferrier’s work and how she creates these gorgeous interiors that are warm and draw you into them. I also have a huge amount of respect for Cindy Smith, not only because of her eye and attention to detail, but how she makes juggling so many things in life look easy.

Why are you most excited about the Designer Network? Being Southern is a special thing, and I am proud to be from the South. It has been an honor to be part of a group filled with so many talented people, and it’s been a great way to connect with other designers who believe your home should be warm, inviting, and ready to welcome any guest.
