Each week, we’re bringing you top tips, favorite products, and Q&A’s with the designers in our Coastal Living and Southern Living Designer Network.

Atlanta, GA designer Julie Holloway of Milk and Honey Home tells us her top three tried-and-true decorating tips that she uses most with her clients.

Tip 1, wall-paper or paint treatments: Stencils, stripes, painting half-walls to appear as wainscoting – try one of these out! If timid, try in a powder room or small entry. You can always add shiplap or wainscoting below the paper or stencil to save time and money.

Tip 2, mix woods and metals: This tip causes the most hand-holding with clients. Yes, you may mix lighter woods with darker woods and the wood that was crafted into furniture does not need to match your hardwood floor stain. Mixing metal finishes and woods gives your home depth, character, and personality.

Tip 3, white is good: White walls fix a lot of problems and create such a nice canvas to play with. We’ve been known to paint a ceiling a light blue or light grey color to give a slight contrast to the light walls. We believe adding both modern and rustic woods, natural fiber rugs, and, again a mix of metals and textiles can make your white room feel calm, warm, and cozy. While you’re at it, layer a cowhide or smaller vintage colorful rug over your seagrass and sisal. More layers of textures and style equals more interesting, comfortable and beautiful in our book.

It’s been years since I have started cleaning houses. In my dreams my house is white with a few pieces of furniture and shiny. So I am planning a little revamp next summer and I want to use some of Julie’s ideas. I believe they will be very helpful for a lot of people.

I clean houses from years, but I have always wanted to have a bright, white home. Next summer I am planning to make a little makeover of my home, so I will implement some of Julie’s ideas. Thanks for sharing those helpful tips.
