It’s time: we’re starting the countdown till Kentucky Derby 2016, and we’re kicking it off with a first look at Churchill Downs’ official menu for this year’s race.
After a year of research, Churchill Downs’ head chef David Danielson picked dishes that showed off international takes on Southern classics from green beans sprinkled with bourbon-smoked sesame seeds to bourbon ball ice cream over white chocolate crepes. Yeah, there’s definitely bourbon involved with this menu. Chef Danielson also sourced many of the ingredients, including the 300 crates of mint for all those juleps, from Kentucky farmers.
Wait, this is the menu for VIPs right? No, friends. Every dish on this year’s menu is served throughout the racetrack’s dining areas for Derby’s more than 170,000 attendees thanks to the help of students from Pennsylvania Technical College who have traditionally assisted with the menu for over 25 years.
