There’s absolutely nothing shocking about exfoliating your face. But the rest of your bod? If you’re like me, scrubbing off all those dead skin cells isn’t always the first priority in your beauty routine. However, thanks to a plethora of body scrubs out there and the reminder that summer is around the corner, we know that we shouldn’t totally ignore our arms, legs, and more. So, we went to an expert to find out exactly how to exfoliate all those other parts that you may have forgotten about.
“It’s important to exfoliate the whole body,” explains Ivy Klein, Lead Massage Therapist for Bliss 49.
“Removing superficial skin cells helps any moisturizer penetrate the skin deeper and prevents breakouts/buildup of excess dry/old skin. It leaves the skin smoother, more even toned, and helps minimize large pores and hyper-pigmentation,” she says.
Now, on to those oft neglected limbs.
This is where that body scrub comes in, so you might as well just buy the one that’s been in your online shopping cart for 6 weeks. Klein says the best way to treat your legs is to mechanically exfoliate (that means physically) with a product like Bliss’ Hot Salt Scrub. “The glycerin-based cleansing scrub sloughs off dead skin, allowing younger newer skin to be revealed,” she explains.
“Scrubbing in circles, towards the heart is beneficial as it will increase circulation. You should always scrub before shaving to get rid of dead skin cells and get a closer shave,” she notes.
Less stubble and smoother skin? Now that’s something we can work with.
Same goes for those arms! Klein suggests a similar product, but notes you should moisturize afterwards to lock in hydration. We like Caudalie Crushed Cabernet ($38; sephora.com) followed by St. Ives Naturally Soothing Oatmeal and Shea Butter Body Lotion ($5; jet.com).
Hands & Feet:
“These are our roughest parts on our bodies and overly exposed to heat, cold, dryness, etc,” Klein tells us. “You can use a scrub just like you would on the legs and arms and immediately moisturize afterwards.” Try something like Fresh Brown Sugar Body Scrub ($67; sephora.com) or Soap and Glory Smoothie Star Breakfast Scrub ($15; soapandglory.com).
Take it from personal experience — this is crazy important before applying a bold lip, especially if you already have lips that tend to get a lil’ flaky. “One area most people do not exfoliate is the lip area,” Klein tells us. “Lip exfoliation is also totally acceptable and encouraged.” She suggests a product like Bliss’ Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub ($19; target.com), which removes dead skin cells, but I’ve also got a thing for The Lip Scrub by Sara Happ in Peony ($24; nordstrom.com).
After you’ve scrubbed your lips, she says you need to moisturize, just like any other part of the body, so make sure you have a balm handy.
When we asked if we should be exfoliating our armpits, we honestly thought we were just asking a really weird question. Turns out, it wasn’t that strange at all. “Yes, you should exfoliate your underarms — it makes for better waxing and shaving. Some people get ingrown hairs in the underarm area from shaving and waxing and keeping it exfoliated is a good idea. It also removes that pesky layer of deodorant that never really goes away,” she says.
