It’s time to get your lowdown on all the must-know news pouring out of our region this week. Avett Brothers, Little Big Town, men’s style, wine dinners, and gallery openings. Hot darn, the South is cool.
Music Galore. It’s a fine, fine week for music fans. With Southern artists like The Avett Brothers, St. Vincent, Dave Matthews Band, and Little Big Town debuting new albums tomorrow (September 11), your iTunes library is going to get a much-appreciated refresh.
MyRecipes’ Favorite Recipes Cookbook. True, we’re a little biased, but we love the simplicity of logging on to MyRecipes and finding an endless collection of Test Kitchen-approved recipes to fit any need. With the new MyRecipes‘ America’s Favorite Recipes book ($25), the team has rounded up the 200 essential recipes from our group’s magazines (including Southern Living, and Cooking Light, Food & Wine) that you’ll want to make over and over.
A New Men’s Shop & Must-Have Dinner in Athens. You’ll be well fed and outfitted if you’re in Athens this week. First up, the dapper guys behind men’s e-shop Five Mile Club have opened a brick-and-mortar on Clayton Street for their newest e-shop, Onward Reserve. You’ll find all the brands you’d want hanging in your guy’s closet—Southern Proper, Peter Millar, and Coast—in a gallant hunting lodge-inspired shop. Look out for a notice on the official opening party next month.
On Tuesday in Athens, Hugh Acheson and co. head up a five-course wine pairing dinner at Acheson’s 5 & 10 restaurant. The honored guest of the evening, Joe Davis (who owns Arcadian Winery in California) will share his insight on the Cali wines that will be served up. Empire State South and 5 & 10 sommelier, Steve Grubbs, promises it’s going to be ‘mind-melting’ conversation. There are a few seats left. Call 706/546-7300 to book your spot.
Todd Selby’s Solo Exhibit in Atlanta. No need to confess exactly how much time we’ve spent browsing the endlessly posh individuals and interiors Todd Selby portrays on his site The Selby—needless to say it’s been quite a bit (sorry, boss). On Thursday, September 13, the photographer pairs two of our favorite things—style and food—when he kicks off a solo exhibit at the Jackson Fine Art gallery in Atlanta. You’ll see some of his best work from The Selby, and get a peak at images from his new book, Edible Selby out next month.
A Food Truck Rally in Birmingham. Food trucks are nothing new, but we’re loving the new sense of camaraderie in four-wheel dining. Many cities across the South are now hosting food truck rallies, in which all the town’s truck vendors gather in one spot for your pick-and-choose pleasure—think food court, but with better food and cooler people. There’s usually bonus activities such as live music and games to boot. Birmingham, Alabama, hosts its first Trucks by the Tracks this Sunday (September 16) at Railroad Park with city faves like Shindigs, Jim ‘N Nick’s, and Taqueria Guzman.
