It’s totally modern. As in these shirts by Claridge and King.

These button-down and ultra-feminine shirts are the signature item from Houston-based Claridge + King, run by two sisters from  Tennessee and Texas. And they’re  the perfect fall foundation, regardless of your look. Think: comfy and chic with leggings and a skinny belt, or rocker edgy when worn with some studded cuffs and skinny jeans.

We talked with Larurann and Lizbeth while they were in between running from fabric houses to boutiques to plan for their next creations. Here’s the skinny on the shirt that has everyone talking:

The Company: Laurann Claridge and Lizbeth King got the idea for their signature shirts from the Oxfords they used to borrow from their dad. They loved to pair his button-downs with their boarding school skirts but found the shirts to be a bit too boxy for their tastes. Now, the Southern-based duo—Lizbeth runs the business from Nashville; Laurann designs in Houston—produces an entire line inspired by classic menswear but with thoughtful feminine details. Shirts start at $98. claridgeandking.com

The Craftsmanship: “Our shirts take up to four weeks to make. We use high-quality cottons and linens, and all of our buttons are made from mother-of-pearl,” says Liz.

The Look: “We pay homage to preppy style, with a modern perspective, like with Great White Shirt No. 2, which has a classic center placket and rounded cuffs,” Laurann says.

The Line: “It includes shirtdresses, loungewear, and His Is Hers Bridal Shirts (shown), embroidered with initials and wedding date,” says Liz.

The Versatility: “You can dress up our pieces with, say, an Hermès scarf or, thanks to a longer hemline, toss them on with leggings,” Liz says.

Also Check Out: Their reversible leggings have two color combinations and are ultra-soft. A perfect piece to transition from fall to winter.
