Last week we gave you the inside scoop on Charleston Fashion Week’s rise to prominence. Now we’re back with more fashion fodder this time about an up-and-coming event: Memphis Fashion Week. This weekend the home of rock ‘n’ roll will become home to rockin’ runways as the city hosts its second annual fashion event.
Though it’s new to the fashion week scene, Memphis is showcasing some seriously high-caliber designers, including Karolina Zmarlak and Billy Reid. But we’re most eager to see the work from three of our go-to, on-the-rise Southern designers:
Annie Griffin: The hometown girl tops our list. This Memphis native, who we featured as one of the South’s Best New Designers in our March issue, is hot thanks to her Atlanta-headquartered eponymous line’s flirty, feminine frocks.
Elaine Turner: Texas-based Elaine Turner churns out some of the chicest shoes and handbags on the market. (Full disclosure: Anytime this editor has to pull cute heels or a striking tote for a story, Elaine Turner Designs is the first place I turn.)
Hilton Hollis: Hilton’s Natchez, Mississippi roots shine through with each piece in his women’s clothing line. How so? He artfully marries rich European fabrics with that-will-never-go-out-of-style silhouettes. He gets that Southern women love classics. And we can’t get enough of his sophisticated dresses for special occasions like weddings and holiday parties.
Memphis Fashion Week will also host the Emerging Memphis Designer Project, a chance for 14 local designers to showcase their work and to connect with the Southern Fashion community. Among the 14 members of EMDP there’s kindergarten teacher, Megan Travis Carr, who works with recycled denim and a pair of high-school students, Madison Miller and Adair Smith, who have their eye on Parson School of Designs. Not to mention a host of seasoned designers who are poised to make their big break. We can’t wait to see the looks they trot down the runway!
