New Pansy

This great new pansy needs a name! Photo: Ball Horticultural Company.

Cool Wave pansies are Grumpy’s favorites. These vigorous, hardy, trailing plants spread two feet wide, making them ideal for hanging baskets, pots, and flowering ground covers. Now there’s a brand new color. Grumpy needs YOU to name it!

Developed by the Ball Horticultural Company, one of the biggest plant breeders in the world, Cool Wave pansies grew out of the Plentifall series Grumpy extolled for their heavy flowering and weather-toughness in a September 2010 Grumpy Gardener.

The original color palette focused on softer, cooler colors such as icy-blue, purple, and white. But this new Cool Wave pansy warms things up with a blend of deep red, burgundy, and bright yellow — perfect colors for fall. The folks at Ball want Southern Living readers to name it — that’s YOU — and you don’t have to subscribe to win. (Can Grumpy be more magnanimous? No, he cannot.)

Prizes for the Lucky Winner
Here’s what you get if your entry is chosen and throngs cheer your happy fortune:

How to Enter
Gaze intently at the beautiful flower at the top and conjure a name that will launch a thousand ships — or, failing that, convey the colors in a catchy way that people can remember. Click here to email your suggested name (only one name and entry per person).

Entries will be accepted from this very moment to the stroke of midnight CST on Sunday, September 22, 2013. The winner will be announced on November 3, 2013. In case two or more peeps enter the same winning name, the person who entered it first wins. If two people enter it on the exact same second, Grumpy will flee to Bolivia and never be heard from again.

So get gazing and conjuring! What would be a really catchy name for this new red-and-yellow pansy? The clock is ticking.

Sorry about the unresponsive link at the beginning of the contest, peeps! See what happens when I leave for vacation? Chaos! It’s working now, though.
