Shindig Features Music, New Billy Reid T-Shirt Line

The Shoals area of Northwest Alabama has a history with good music. Just take a look back 40 years ago and you’ll see music legends–Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and more–and chart-topping hits bursting from the modest brick recording studios of Muscle Shoals.

Yes, we’re talking about Billy Reid.

For the past six years, the Southern designer, known for good taste in both fashion and music, has hosted the Billy Reid Shindig, a weekend-long event celebrating all things Southern–good music, good fashion, good food and good times.

He’s also been creating cheeky tees printed with anything from gravy boats to band names, but since 2012 he’s had a playful line that also works for a local cause. Continuing the tradition, he once again teamed up with Alabama Gulf Seafood to create a new series for 2014 that will debut at this weekend’s annual Shindig in Florence.  Get yours ($56) at

This year’s Shindig 6 will also ring in the 10th anniversary of the fashion brand, and will feature top chefs, a photography exhibit, and, of course, a stellar music lineup.

Whether you’re looking for an outdoor concert at Wilson Park or an evening well spent at The Shoals Theater, Billy Reid’s Shindig consistently delivers up-and-coming, as well as established, artists who keep the Alabama music scene alive and well.

Past groups that have graced the stages of Billy Reid’s Shindig include  Alabama Shakes (2012), an Americana band that was later nominated for multiple Grammys, and St. Paul and the Broken Bones (2013), a seven-instrument soul band from Birmingham, Ala.

Billy Reid continues his tradition of rounding up the South’s best music groups, with Shindig 6’s headliners being Wild Cub and The Apache Relay.

While these two Southern bands both hail from Nashville, Tennessee, they each have a distinct indie sound, making Friday’s performance a must-see. Wild Cub is most known for their hit song “Thunder Clatter,” which debuted in January 2013 and was featured in television commercials and on the radio. The Apache Relay, a quintet with humble beginnings from Belmont University, is also climbing the music ranks after releasing the album American Nomad in 2011, and their latest album, The Apache Relay, in April 2014.

There will also be an outdoor concert Friday night at Wilson Park, featuring a lineup of local and out-of-town singer-songwriters including Dan Dyer, Donnie Fritts, Dylan LeBlanc, Nikki Lane, and T. Hardy Morris.
