That Gingham Shirt Really IS Everywhere

August 25, 2014 | By | Comments (8)

It’s been called “The Dude Fashion Trend You Cannot Unsee” and “The Bacon of Shirts.” It’s so popular it has its own Instagram account (@thatjcrewginghamshirt). The blue-and- white J. Crew gingham shirt is out of control. That gingham shirt is everywhere. And the South is no different. In fact, we called the gingham shirt our instant classic all the way back in the spring.

You don’t really notice that it has been the shirt of the summer until someone points it out. But once you are alerted (and who hasn’t seen the viral story?) you can’t look away. They are, quite simply, everywhere. In the course of three hours at Birmingham restaurant Dram Saturday I saw no fewer than five of them:

Then today during our morning staff meeting, there were two! Please note: my colleagues did not plan this. (Though both show how versatile this magical shirt is.)

We can’t say gingham was invented in the South, but we have been wearing this shirt long before it had its own Instagram account. So raise a glass (or a skillet) to gingham, and we apologize in advance for the fact that you’ll now notice it everywhere.

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to
be actually something which I think I would never understand.
It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me.
I’m looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!

Aw, this was a very good post. Taking a few minutes and
actual effort to generate a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and don’t seem to get nearly anything done.

I’ve definitely been among three people in my office wearing this shirt, up here in NY. Funny to know it happens everywhere.

    I’m feeling ” un-Southern.” Don’t own a gingham shirt.
