What to Wear To a Formal Wedding

Wedding season is a year-round affair in the South. And because we know it’s often more than the main event, we teamed up with our friends at fashion rental site Rent the Runway to bring you a month of setting-specific looks to get you through an action-packed wedding weekend. This week, formal weddings.

We all get a little nervous when we read “black tie” on a wedding invite. But, stress not. This is an opportunity to play dress up—think jewel-tone colors, intricate fabrics, and sweeping lengths. Here, three elegant looks to set the tone.

For the bridal brunch
Go for: Lacy, bold, and colorful
The dress: This dress is traditional and playful. The lace detailing is ladylike without being too prim and proper, and the sheer fabric over the collarbone lends a touch of sass. Complement the bright yellow hue with metallic accessories. Marchesa Notte Lupita Dress, $75

For the rehearsal dinner
Go for: A modern take on a classic
The dress: Change up the usual sheath shape of a cocktail dress with a high-low silhouette that’s figure flattering. The ombré shade is daring, but not overwhelming. Complete the look with a statement necklace. Halston Heritage Great Fade Dress, $70

For the wedding
Go for: Long and narrow with a bit of sparkle
The dress: This lavender number nips in at the waist, creating curves in all the right places. Tie your hair back in a sleek pony to highlight the gossamer shoulder detailing. Badgley Mischka Lilac Petal Gown, $130
