Beer, bivalves, and the beach: we’re fans of all three things here at Southern Living, so we’re excited about this year’s 8th annual Hangout Oyster Cook-off & Craft Beer weekend. The two-day event, located in Gulf Shores, AL, will kick off on Friday, November 6 with the Craft Beer Festival, featuring some of the South’s most popular breweries: expect to sample sips from breweries like Alabama’s Good People Brewing Co. and Fairhope Brewing, and North Carolina’s Oskar Blues.

Saturday the 7, the Oyster Cook-off commences with over 70 chefs and restaurants participating. With multiple James Beard Award-winning chefs competing and offering demonstrations, the event is a can’t-miss experience for oyster-lovers. “I’m looking forward to competing,” says chef Kevin Korman of Caliza in Alys Beach, FL, “but for me, it’s not about winning, it’s more about checking out the great things everyone else is doing.” Korman won’t divulge his game plan, but mentions that, concerning oysters, it’s important to have, “something with acid, something with crunch, and something with heat.”

St. Louis chef Kevin Nashan knows a thing or two about oysters. At his Peacemaker Lobster & Crab Co., they’ve offered around fifty different varieties in the last year. Nashan is excited about competing for the first time. “It’s great to meet new faces and really get to see the creativity of others,” he says. “November is the perfect time for this cook-off; the oysters are really at their peak.”

Other chefs joining Nashan and Korman for the weekend will be Bill Smith, Anne Burrell, Alon Shaya, and Marc Murphy, among others. For a full listing of all of the participating chefs, go here.

Live music, a Bloody Mary Invitational, and the inaugural North American Oyster Showcase round out the weekend. The Showcase will feature more than 30 producers from the Maritimes to the Gulf, allowing attendees to compare, side-by-side, their favorite varieties. Keep an eye out for SL’s own Pam Lolley, who will be attending as a judge.
